For the Protect Matunuck Web site
ALERT
WE NEED YOU TO TAKE ACTION !!!!
If you’ve been on Matunuck Beach Road in the last three weeks you have seen some dramatic changes. The Town of South Kingstown has started to install their steel sheet pile wall at the road. The Town is hampering the progress of construction of the permitted repair of Mary Carpenter’s Historic Sea Wall, despite the fact that the town and Kevin Finnegan joined forces to win the permit to do so. This has resulted in two BIG PROBLEMS.
First- The preparation for construction of the steel wall has stripped away any protection the road may have had. The cement wall and blocks that previously provided adequate protection, for thirty plus years, even through Super Storm Sandy, have been moved. The road is completely exposed. One storm and the ocean will cross the road for the first time in a generation.
Second- The absence of coordination between the reconstruction of Mary Carpenter’s historic sea wall and the sheet pile wall is putting additional investment from Kevin Finnegan at risk. He is willing and ready to pay for the construction to protect 1100 feet of shoreline. But first he needs the 583 feet to the west of his building.
HERE IS HOW YOU CAN HELP
Call Governor Raimondo. 401-222- 2080. A secretary will answer the phone. Leave this message: The State needs to step in to protect Matunuck. You helped before and we need you again. The road is in more jeopardy now than ever before. The two wall projects should be coordinated. Stop construction of the steel wall now and coordinate the two projects.
Matunuck Beach Road is a State Road, not a Town Road. Governor Raimondo and the Department of Transportation have ultimate responsibility for the road and any consequences that result from a poorly planned project.
