Negative Impacts of South Kingston Sheet Pile Wall Along Roadway
- Does not protect properties and businesses contributing significantly to RI economy
- Accelerates erosion of the seaward properties, until they are ultimately lost
- More than 100 jobs will be lost. Suppliers and other businesses will lose income
- Tax revenue to State will be lost, calculated in hundreds of thousands of dollars
- Will eventually create flanking erosion problems for the properties to the east and west of the proposed wall
- The un-maintained sea wall on the Mary Carpenter parcels will ultimately fail, and erosion will advance to the edge of the roadway in this area. The sheet pile wall will need to be extended an additional 375 feet to the west to protect this portion of the road
- Provides no additional parking
- Access to shoreline over wall not provided
- Roadway will be subject to direct wave overtopping, rocks, and debris without the buffer of the properties
